    Emancipation in Louisiana at Sixteen
I am sixteen years old, seventeen in several months. I live with my father, who is going through a divorce with my stepmother. Previously, I lived with my stepmother and my father for most of my life.
My stepmother is in the Navy, and was stationed on a base about an hour away from wherre I live with my father. She has provided for me by helping me with registering for school, helping me obtain transportation when I need to go somewhere, and provided clothing and money when necessary. My father allows me to live in his house, and provides food, but does not assist in any other needs, such as school or medical care. I am responsible for getting myself to and from school, paying money for expenses at school, cooking for myself, scheduling and transporting myself to the doctor when necessary, ect. He is not abusive, but my stepmother is willing to let me live with her, and my father refuses to 'be responsible for me if I'm going to be living somewhere else.' I am considering filing for emancipation. As I have said, I am sixteen. I plan to join the Armed Forces in January of 2011. Would it be worth my time to file for emancipation now, or just wait until I join the Army and gain emancipation that way?
    Thank you for any/all help.

Even if emancipation WERE legally possible, it would almost certainly take longer than 4 months to even get a hearing, since you are not in any physical danger. My advice is to suck it up and join the military as soon as you are old enough. Joining the military will automatically "emancipate" you.
