Shoplifting in NYC
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Brooklyn,NY
I'm 24. A graduate student now. I don't know what had coming to me that made me do such a humiliating thing.
I was caught in Century 21 for things around $21, on 26 last month. The LP took me to their room and photoed me. They also took every single info from my ID card. But they don't have my SS# and school info. They made me sign a few paper works, including how much the things worth and how long I cannot return to their store. And then they let me go. there was NO police in the whole process.
Yesterday, I received a letter from them, asking for a civil penalty for around$110. and I paid immediately. I don't know whether they'll still put me into the court.
my questions are:
1. Would it be very likely that they will?
2. As I cannot afford a lawyer, if I have to go to the court, should I just speak to the judge and see whether I'm qualified for a public defender? I have no job now, and I'm not even a citizen .
3. Since this is my first (at will be the last) offense, I will not finish in jail,it seems? What kind of sentence should I expect most? will that leave a record for me? for my future employer?
I'm very worried now and regret! :wallbang:Please help me!
Thanks in advance! and a lot!

Re: Shoplifting in NYC
No police. Civil Demand paid. You should be fine.
Key word is "Should". The store does have 1-2 years depending on state law to file charges.
Stay out of all C-21 stores, don't shoplift again, you should be fine.
