Removal of Disabilities of Minority in Texas
My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Texas
I'm a 17 year old female who is a Texas resident. I graduated from a Texas Charter School last December as Valedictorian, therefore I have an abundance of scholarship money and a valid high school diploma. I want to attend UT at Austin and major in Studio Art, however my parents are telling me that I cannot move out of my fathers house until I'm 18, which is 11 months from now. I worked very hard to get my scholarships and graduate a year and a half early, and now I feel like my parents are holding me back. I live with my father, but my mother has custody over me. She walked out on me about 2 years ago so she could live with her new husband. I work a part time job near my home, and I pay my own car payments as well as pay rent to my dad. I feel that neither of my parents do what they should for me. They don't take me to the doctor when I'm sick, take me to the eye doctor when I need new contacts, or even buy me tampons when I need them. I don't feel that it's fair that I can't move out of the house when it does me no good to stay here. I just want to go to UT! If I go to court for removal of disabilities of a minor, will my case be approved? My parents would never agree to it, but can the court issue it anyway?

Can you support yourself totally on a part-time job? That means rent, utilities, food, transportation, including car maintenance, payments, and insurance, school costs, staples (like TP, laundry soap, etc.) medical expenses, etc.?

    I doubt it.

There is more to the story here.

What is the name of the person you HAVE to go to UT to be with?

Ah, Jeffy, usually I'd agree with you, but scholarships are often school specific.

If you go elsewhere, the money vanishes.

Actually, I get paid pretty well, and can mostly support myself on my own. Utilities are included in what I pay my father for rent, and as I said before, I pay my own car payments. I also am forced to pay my own medical expenses on my own!! On top of that, I buy my own food because my family doesn't provide!! I'm a vegetarian, and if they EVER buy ANYTHING, it's some type of LARGE MEAT PRODUCT! And Also, as I said before, I have an ABUNDANCE of schoolarships and two grants willing to help pay for school. Also I qualify foor financial aid because my mother is in fact, unemployed.

So please, instead of being negative and telling me that I'm not self-sufficient, READ what I have to say, and tell me what I have to do to get the process of having my disabilites removed started.

    "Mostly" support yourself?

    That is NOT "self-sufficient".

And please - don't bring an attitude here.

Nobody...I acually don't know many people in Austin aside from a close female friend and my cousin. I want to major in Studio Art. UT happens to be a great school for that, and most of my scholarships are directed there. I don't want to lose my opportunity for a better education if its already paid for. I worked HARD to get where I'm at! I'm not just trying to get out of the house to get away from mommy and daddy's rules. I never see my dad anyway because he works his life away. I just need to break the legal bond between us so I can go to college, and have a better opportunity for myself. They're holding me back.

That's just how I type, not an attitude. I only used the word mostly, because I wasn't sure if it would fit your definition of self-sufficient. I have confidence that I could survive on my own with out living under my dad's roof. Don't respond to me, if you're no trying to help. I can just go pay a real attorney and figure this out, which is probably what I'll have to end up doing. Thanks for your worthless response.

Ok, I'm going to go in a different direction here, without knowing what the possible outcomes may be. I have several friends that are currently enrolled in college and doing their work online. Does the college that you wish to attend have this available? If so, this would allow you to stay at home for the next 11 months and still attend school during that time. Might not be the perfect solution, but it would be a work around to help you accomplish your goals. Congrats on your early graduation, and good luck with your goals.

I'm not sure. That's good suggestion though. Obviously, that's not my first choice of going about things, but it would help me acomplish what I'm trying to. I'll look into it. Thanks so much.

I'll respond whenever and to whomever I choose, dear.

What you really meant to type was, "Please tell me what I want to hear".

By all means consult with a local attorney who will guide you further.

And yes - congratulations on your early graduation. That IS something of which you can be proud!
