Seatbelts being a lawful requirement is obvious in several manners.
First: Seatbelts=Saved lives (allgedly)=less traffic deaths=less clean up hours by the state
Second: Having a seat belt law in place shows responsibility by the issuing state and reflects positively on the state's federal funding
and a third sub point here: in Wisconsin, a seat belt fine is 10 dollars. This can not possibly be too much more than the cost of the officer's time writing the ticket, processing time ect... I doubt any state is profiting financially significantly on seatbelt laws
I specifically remember being told this in law school by one of my professors and, not saying I was right, but I thought at the time, "Isn't the only difference whether you take them to the hospital or the morgue?" In other words, maybe it is less costly to treat those accident victims who ride without helmets or do not use seat belts because they are most likely dead. But then I suppose there would be other burdens placed on society as a result of their deaths.Quote:

I have never actually seen a calculation of the relative costs, out-of-pocket or otherwise. I have seen people who have suffered severe head trauma and brain injury in motor vehicle accidents, though, and it's not something I would like to see happen to anybody, even if they really like feeling the wind blowing through their hair.

My response:
Google is your friend: Read Michigan seat restraint/medical cost statistics, Here
Thanks. I was speaking, though, litigator's question, "maybe it is less costly to treat those accident victims who ride without helmets or do not use seat belts because they are most likely dead." Michigan's analysis isn't quite that morbid.

I was referring to your statement: "I have never actually seen a calculation of the relative costs, out-of-pocket or otherwise." (emphasis added)
I wanted you to see, at least, something.

"Most likely" is fairly vague and ambiguous. The medical costs of survivors of these types of accidents (especially those of helmetless m/c riders, is astronomical. Most are survivors, and they tax the medical system disproportionately.

Thank you for offering me the link. I am sorry I wasn't more clear with my remark, as I did have that specific context in mind.
