Speeding Ticket While in the Process of Moving Out of State
My question involves a speeding ticket from the State of: California
I currently live in the Contra Costa County (CA) and was traveling through Los Angeles during a vacation last week when I received a speeding ticket for 97 in a 65 in Kern County. The only problem is I am in the process of moving and will be living in the Utah County starting at the end of this week. That is where I will live, work, and study. I have a current CA Drivers license and am over 21 years old.
I have 2 main questions:
1. Is there a possibility of a mandatory court appearance?
- I did not request a change of venue at the time of issuance.
- If there is a mandatory appearance is it still possible to request one.
2. I am guessing there is a possibility of my license being suspended due to my speed. But if I receive a Utah driver's license before my ticket is even processed is it still possible for a CA judge to suspend an out-of-state license?
- Should I get my new license right away?
and I guess a 3rd...
3. Who can I contact to try and resolve this mess?
I'm not trying to sneak out of anything, but the timing has just complicated the situation tremendously. This is a first time post and I appreciate the support.
*edit* I also find it appropriate to mention that I do not necessarily wish to appear in a court or contest the ticket. I am willing to just pay whatever fine there is and do traffic school if possible. The one thing I would not appreciate would be to have a suspended license, I think that can just ruin anyone's life.
Re: Speeding Ticket While in the Process of Moving Out of State
1. Does the ticket say that there is a mandatory court appearance? When you try to pay it online, are you rejected by the system?
2. California can suspend your driving privileges in California, and abstract that information to Utah. Utah will then either suspend your license or decline to renew it until you've resolved any California suspension. You can expect California to learn of your Utah license when Utah inquires about the validity of your California license. Is it possible for something to fall through the cracks? Yes, but you shouldn't count on it.
3. What do you mean? If you want to hire a lawyer to represent you for the ticket, try contacting some lawyers in Contra Costa County who handle speeding ticket defense.
Re: Speeding Ticket While in the Process of Moving Out of State
The ticket doesn't specify a mandatory court appearance or not, I have to wait until they send the courtesy note or something that has the info of the court date and such. I've decided that I am going to find an attorney who deals with traffic tickets in the Kern county, could anyone recommend someone?
