    Caught Shoplifting but Left
My question involves criminal law for the state of: florida

I was caught shoplifting at a store called Stein Mart. It was a couple of shirts that i removed the tag from and put in my bag(large purse). However I did this out of sight of the camera (pretty sure). My bag was in a shopping cart (the very deep Macys kind of carts) and i stooped down and acted like im putting the shirts in the cart but instead threw them in my purse..
but i accidentally left the tags i ripped off on the floor :/
As i was leaving the store a guy obstructed me and said he was LP and i needed to come with him. I said 'no, why?' i walked right past him and out of the store. As i was walking to the car he said, 'we just want the merchandise back and we dont want any problems'..I kept walking..he did not try to obstruct me or detain me in the parking lot. But he wrote down my license plate number and said he will notify police,,. I drove off calmly..
Later (30min later) i drove by and noticed a police car outside the main entrance..it was there a good one hour..(i kept checking bc i live close by)..
I called the sherriffs office to talk to a deputy..i tried to find out status of the 'report' this store made..they said the store is claiming they saw me on camera stealing something..I denied..they said then i have nothing to worry about..

even though im 99% sure camera did not see me ..there is a smallll chance they saw me stuff the shirts in my purse.... whats the next step?
will police come to my house? If i was seen on camera will i be arrested? what if i wasnt seen on camera? are removed tags enough to arrest?
will i recieve something in the mail? what should i be EXPECTING?
Its my FIRST time doing this.. I DONT want it on my record..i did it just for the fun of it..and regret it bad.. I shop at that store ALOT..i messed up.
Just dont know what to expect now!!

Are you sure the person you spoke to had all the facts? Given that it wouldn't take a genius to figure out why you're interested, they may have mislead you. You can't be 100% certain cause the cameras these days can do amazing things. It's also possible the LP agent physically saw you do it. No footage needed, case closed, see you in court.

They will probaby file a police report, and if applicable in your jurisdiction, seek a warrant for your arrest. Is it possible an officer with free time might swing by to chat with you? Sure but it's unlikely. The warrant will probably just sit there until you get pulled over or stopped for shoplifting the next time. Warrants don't expire either. They're good until you're caught or the courts quash it for whatever reason.

Removed tags in some jurisdictions are enough to constitute a crime but when you put them in your purse, game over.

I don't know Stein Mart's policy but you might try calling and speaking to their LP to see if you can arrange to surrender the merchandise and pay a civil demand.

The cop car may have been there for an hour getting all the video copied for the case file, shooting the breeze or LP may have caught someone else while they were there taking your report.

Next time you wanna do something just for the fun of it....go eat 20 Big Macs or sniff glue or drink a gallon of milk in one sitting...just make sure you've paid for the materials first.

Don't be surprised if you get a knock on your door from the cops.

Video surveillance can be amazing....and in more places than you think. Ever see the infamous Casey Anthony "Target" tape - it showed everything she bought. Some systems can even see a quarter on the ground...and if it is on "heads" or "tails".

Let this be a lesson to you.....if you were to be caught, it could cost you a lot of money. Civil Demand ($200-300); Court Fees ($300), lawyer or public defender (not free); Anti-shoplifting class or Community Service (you may have the joy of paying for that too).

    Not worth it, huh?
