Stealing a Sandwich in Maine
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Maine
I placed a sandwich in my pocket and left the store. I ate the sandwich and returned to the store about 10 minutes later. I placed another sandwich in my pocket. I removed the sandwich and proceeded to pay for it. As I was paying, I saw an employee watching out the window. Another employeed joined her and I saw them go to my truck. The windows were rolled down and they looked in my truck. They returned to the store and didn't pay attention to me as I collected my sandwich and receipt. 2 weeks later, I have received a summons for theft. I have felt very sorry and disapointed in myself. I am scheduled to appear in 2 months. I was convicted of shoplifting about 15 years ago in Maine. I would do anything to reverse my stupidity and my reputation means everything at this point in my life. Do I stand a prayer of not being convicted? I'm assuming they have a video.
Re: Stealing a Sandwich in Maine
If they have video, you're going to have a difficult time disputing the charge. You're clearly old enough to know better, so I don't know if the prosecutor will be willing to cut you any slack. I suggest working with a local criminal defense lawyer.
