My question involves criminal law for the state of: California I was arrested for shoplifting. Three moths ago is was held and released for the same act. no ploice were called, I paid the civil demand...What will happen now? Is this an prior conviction if no police were involed? I have no crimial record. Court date is set. What shuold I expect?

Jail time is rare for a first offense.

Have you consulted an attorney yet? If you haven't, you really should.

If you can't afford a lawyer: You go into court for arraignment. Plead "Not Guilty". Ask for a Public Defender.

You can expect court costs and fines.

Also, expect a Civil Demand notice to arrive in the mail - that is separate, and also needs to be paid.

It depends. If you ask for a Public Defender, it will not be over in 1 trip to court. If you go to trial, it can be 4.

If you want it over with fast.....Criminal Defense Lawyer.

Rates vary, but plan on $750 - $2000

You have to go into court for arraignment. This is where you make your plea. If you plea guilty, you leave the judges hands tied to impose a harsh sentence. Not guilty, then there is a chance of being given a reduced charge.
