Is There Always Jail Time with Shoplifting
My question involves criminal law for the state of: California I was arrested for shoplifting. Three moths ago is was held and released for the same act. no ploice were called, I paid the civil demand...What will happen now? Is this an prior conviction if no police were involed? I have no crimial record. Court date is set. What shuold I expect?
Re: Is There Always Jail Time with Shoplifting
Jail time is rare for a first offense.
Have you consulted an attorney yet? If you haven't, you really should.
Re: Is There Always Jail Time with Shoplifting
Iam going to use a public defender...how does that work...never did this before and will never again
Re: Is There Always Jail Time with Shoplifting
is there a chance that I might just have to pay a fine and end it there? the lp said I would have to go to court and pay a fine.
Re: Is There Always Jail Time with Shoplifting
If you can't afford a lawyer: You go into court for arraignment. Plead "Not Guilty". Ask for a Public Defender.
You can expect court costs and fines.
Also, expect a Civil Demand notice to arrive in the mail - that is separate, and also needs to be paid.
Re: Is There Always Jail Time with Shoplifting
Is all this seattled in one day...or will I have to return to court?
Re: Is There Always Jail Time with Shoplifting
It depends. If you ask for a Public Defender, it will not be over in 1 trip to court. If you go to trial, it can be 4.
