Student Loan Fraud
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Florida
While my husband lived in Florida, he worked for a Law Enforcement Agency that re-imbursed college tuition based on good grades. He attended a local college, and did well. The reimbursement came in his paycheck, issued every 2 weeks. He attended 2002-2004, graduated with high honors. He went on to get a Masters in Crim Justice, graduated Summa in 2006. My husband's only mistake was trusting that his wife (at the time) was actually paying the tuition bills.
Instead of using the "bump" from the paycheck to pay the bills as they came in, his ex-wife applied for student loans on-line in my husband's name without his knowledge, never told him, and they all defaulted. The promissory note reads ONLINE SIGNATURE. He had no knowledge that she had done this, as she had handled the bill-paying while they were married. When things got dicey closer to the divorce, my husband took control of paying for his Master's, paying at the school in cash, class by class. There are no loans related to his Master's Degree institution.
Ex-wife's credit issues are sordid, so the phone calls we got regarding student loans we figured were related to her, or just mistaken identity altogether. This year, the IRS offset an 8K tax refund to pay for the defaulted loans, and this is how we learned that the EX did this. NSLDS verrifies the loans, Stafford Subsidized and Unsubsidized. 2 are for a school that my husband never attended. We are shocked.
The loan amount is significant, and this is the ultimate "get". This pock mark on his credit could prevent him from getting any sort of law enforcement related position again. Suing her would be pointless -- she is a deadbeat. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Student Loan Fraud
So you're stating that these loans were taken out in 2002 - 2004, and that your husband first learned about them this year? What did he do after he learned about the loans - did he, for example, try to make a fraud report with the lender(s)?
