What Are the Consequences of Shoplifing
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Shoplifting.
I am 17 years old and was stopped for shoplifting in Minnesota. I live in North Dakota. My friend has stolen two things, and asked me to take Earrings off of the packet for her, because the owner was suspicious of her. I did, but as I was my friend ditched I and I had the rings. I started for the door and the lady asked me to stop. I know I should not have given into peer pressure, but I had a bad lapse of judgment. I know what I did was wrong and I regret it. I cooperated, and the cops were called because of store policy, he contacted my parents and let me go with a guardian (another friend that was with who was eighteen.) They said I will have a court date.
I will be Turing eighteen in a month. I'm wondering if age will matter. Also this is my first offence and I have never had any other 'run ins' with the cops. I have a clean record and good grades.
What will the fines consist of?
Will there be jail time?
Can I get a job later on?
And if I tell the judge about the other person who stole and talked me into taking the earrings off the rack, what would happen to her?
What will happen to me?
Thank you for helping me out!

Was the sale value of the goods you stole?
(Telling the judge that someone talked you into it won't work and is generally considered a bad idea).

Phew. When you mentioned earrings I wasn't sure whether we were talking felony-level or not.
Thankfully (for you) not.
You're most likely going to get a slap on the wrist, a fine ($150 in MN) and of course you'll have to pay the civil demand.
You may also get probation.

Thank you so much!
Do you have any suggestions on what to say in court?
I'm still really nervous but your information is a big relief and very much appreciated.
