    Minor Caught Shoplifting in Chicago
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois

I was caught shoplifting a belt on accident at Sears in Chicago. The belt was originally with another item i intended to buy but i took it off to see if it would fit me correctly. When i decided not to take the item, i went to put it back but put the belt in my bag so i could carry the items i bought earlier easier. Stupid i know. I was taken down to the security room where they took my info and told me that, (since im 15), my sister I had to sign a release form saying I wouldnt be allowed back into that store for 2 years. They also told me that i would recieve a letter in the mail and a fine for the belt. But what confuses me is that I am from Michigan and was wondering if they will still send the letter for the fine. Also, the belt itself did not have a tag or value, so how much would they fine me for and how long would i have to wait for the letter?

Another thing is that the police weren't called but i'm concerned that I will have a criminal record afterwards. (This is the first crime that I have ever commited)

Why wouldn't they? Living in another state does not release you from your obligation.

No tag does not indicate no value. You can expect the fine to be for a couple hundred dollars. The letter may arrive in a few days, it may take as long as a couple months. In any case, pay it immediately.

If the police weren't involved, you have no record. If you do not pay the civil demand, however, Sears has the option of both suing your parents for the amount AND pressing criminal charges.

Ok. The guards told me that I would only get the fine if there was any damage which there wasnt, but most likely i will still get one? And what exactly is the civil demand and how long do i have to pay it?

A Civil Demand is the letter you will get from Sears, demanding that you pay restitution of $X. It will have a due date on it. Pay it by then, or if you can't, call them to make payment arrangements.
