Plea for Shoplifting in West Virginia
My question involves criminal law for the state of: WV. I was caught shoplifting at macys. I was given a civil demand for double which made it $212. I go to municipal court in a couple days. I called and asked if I could have a public defender appointed to me but they said no not for ur first offense. I'd like to make some kind of plea that will take this off my record. What exactly should I plea? I'm in nursing school and I would hate to not be able to get a job bc of this mistake. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

You can check the court's website, the prosecutor's website, or inquire with a local lawyer about the availability of diversion programs or deferrals that might allow you to avoid a conviction. The availability and terms of such alternative sentences varies by state and county, and not all offenders will qualify even when they're available.
