What Are the Consequences of Getting Caught Shoplifting
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan

My friend the other day shoplifted a K Mart Store for a skateboard which was normally $62 but he switched the tag with another and was caught on video. When he went to exit the store security grabbed him and took him in the back making him fill out information about himself such as addresses, SSN and more. They didn't call the cops and didn't say anything until he left saying he would be contacted by K Mart lawyers within 3 weeks by mail and would have to pay 10 times the amount of the orinigal retail price of the item he stole. Is this true? And will he have to go to court over this?
    Thank You

If they told him that he will get a civil demand, I would expect him to get a civil demand. If he doesn't pay the civil demand he can be sued. If he's under 18, his parents can be sued along with him.

By "will he have to go to court" do you mean "will he be criminally charged"? We can't answer that for you. Some stores turn over a dossier on a shoplifting incident to the police, rather than having the police come to the scene. He'll have to wait and see what happens.
