She moved to California recently - about a year ago. Child was delivered in California about 6 months ago.
She works in Finance (trading) - she made a lot of money in the stock market during the real estate boom. When we split, she had saved up about $350k. After she delivered, she transferred that money into a friends name, hoping the courts would award her more child support by appearing broke on paper. I have no problem paying child support - I just don't want to over pay, considering she has a lot more than me.
Thanks!
California will base support on combined income and time share. I've never heard of a child support order being issued based on what one parent has in savings. Hiding assets would only matter if you two were married and arguing about assets attained during the course of the marriage.
You should seriously consider hiring an attorney in her jurisdiction.
Re: Child Support Payments in Illinois
Thank you both so much for helping.
Would you recommend I start paying child support asap or should I wait for the court order before I start making payments?
Thanks!
Re: Child Support Payments in Illinois
Her assets matter not, and the fact that she makes 3x more than you HURTS you more than it helps you, especially if she has the majority of the timeshare (which she does). It's also not going to help you that child care in CA is HORRIDLY expensive, especially for an infant.
