    Minor's First Offense - Shoplifting
My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Texas
Yesterday my 13 year old daughter was caught stealing a $9.00 ring from a local retail jewerly store. The police were called, and I was given a ticket. This is my daughters first time ever doing anything this stupid. She is a good student, great daughter, just made a dumb choice. Please tell me what are my legal options to keep this from showing up on her record? The ticket says I have 12 days to appear in court so I will be calling today on this manner. Thanks for any assistance that you can offer me.

You got a ticket? For your daughter, I presume.

You should probably get a lawyer as soon as you can. The good news is that since your daughter is 13, she'll be charged as a juvenile, and the record can be sealed when she turns 21.

Keep in mind that you may get a civil demand letter requesting a few hundred dollars; if you don't pay it, there's a chance that you'll be sued for a lot more than that. The civil demand is unrelated to any criminal proceedings and thus won't show on any criminal records.
