Furthering Education While Working
I have a situation where I am sure, that my employer will make it difficult for me to attend classes to further my education. Like giving me extra work and keeping me at work knowing that I have to get to classes. He believes that anyone that works for him needs to be concentrating on his business only and nothing else. I don't intend to work there for the rest of my life and would like to have some backup education just in case.
Is it illegal for an employer to not allow employees to go to school to further their potential for getting hired somewhere else when the economy gets tough?
Re: Furthering Education While Working
He can't forbid you from going to school. However, if your classes interfere with your scheduled hours or your ability to work overtime, you could legally be fired. The employer does not have to take into consideration your desire to improve yourself. Have you thought about online classes?
Re: Furthering Education While Working
I had a boss like that once - I signed up for night classes (Tuesdays nights only 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm and my regular working hours were weekdays 8.00 am to 4.30 pm) and then told her about it. She was a control freak and didn't like anyone in her department doing anything without her permission (really anything, personal on the weekends you name it if you did it without her blessing she'd try to kybosh it) and so naturally as soon as classes started I all of a sudden started having to stay late on Tuesday nights - when I never had to before, just to do busywork (like making lists of the files in my file cabinets, and going through the personnel files to see how many and which had application forms in them) that was ignored/thrown out after I finished it.
So I never got to go to more than two classes + I lost all my tuition fees (I didn't cancel early enough because I kept thinking this little control tantrum of hers would end soon - oh silly me). And I had absolutely no legal recourse.
I did realize though that I probably would have been able to attend classes and complete the course had I just not told her about it. If you can't find appropriate on-line courses, consider just not telling your boss about the course.

As is right and proper. His responsibility is to his business, not your desire for other education.
If you believe your employer will not work with you to accommodate your school schedule, seek employment with a company that will.

It's really hard right now to find another job with the economy so bad. McDonald's is not even hiring. My employer is using this to his greedy advantage.

And I was supposed to know that because?
Perhaps your cosmetology school is just going to have to wait then.

It's not greedy to care more about your own livelihood than the future career plans of your employees. Neither is it illegal, immoral, or anything else you choose to call it.
It's called looking out for the needs of your business. He's looking out for his business, it's up to you to look out for yours.

The same thought process can be lent to your desire to further your education, better yourself, then leave him stranded without you to work for him. You're using school for your own greedy advantage, aren't you? You're using him for your own greedy advantage, aren't you? You aren't leaving your place of employment because you have no other means to support yourself. If you HAD the means to support yourself, you'd drop him like a bad habit.
These are the things America is made of. You look out for yourself, and he'll look out for him.

I'm not using school for my own greedy advantage!!!! I'm using school because I know there is something out there it will be a pleasure to go to work. Ever been in a job where you absolutely hate going into work everyday? Ever get sick on Sunday knowing that you have to face all the deceitfulness and hostility that goes on everyday at that place of business.
Hostility..........yeh, that is what happened to me. I had a fellow employee come at me and the business owner didn't do a thing about it. Now after all this the owner comes to me and says that my job should be my first priority and people would swarm to have my job.
Sounds like if I am wanting to leave, then I am greedy, right?
