Caught Shoplifting
My question involves criminal law for the state of: MI
A friend and myself were recently caught shoplifting at Meijer. We took makeup out of their packaging and put them in our purses. We also picked up something small to buy in the checkout. On our way out the door we were stopped and confronted by a worker. She had been off the clock and shopping in the store after her shift when she decided to start watching us. She took us into her office and searched our purses, pulling out all of the stolen makeup. She priced it all, mine came up to $118 and my friend's came up to $50. She said there were two sides to shoplifting, civil and criminal. She said we were both being fined $200, that we had to pay withing 30 days but she also said we were going to be prosecuted and that we would be receiving paperwork in the mail as to when to appear in court. But she never called the police, I was wondering why? Is there a chance she was just trying to scare us by saying we were going to be prosecuted? Also, I have a prior record and I am currently on probation, with a delay of sentence. I'm worried about what will happen to me if I get charged?

Re: Caught Shoplifting
What see did was file the paperwork directly with the police. I surmise she did this as she didn't want to spend the time waiting for the police as she was "off the clock" as you say. They is nothing wrong with how she handled the matter.
