About Charles M. Gerlach
Biography:
I am 33 years old and facing a strange set of circumstances leading to a summons as the first step toward being evicted. Over time, I have slowly come to the understanding that the onsite property manager at my residence has prejudices against both African Americans, as well as Mexican Americans or Hispanic people of a darker skin tone than her own. She is Central American although I do not know exactly what country she is from.
My wife has gone to Europe for her final semester of college. Before she left we made sure it was alright to sublet our second bedroom to a friend who happens to be African American. "No problem, nothing to sign."
Today, one month later I returned from the grocery store to find a summons halfway shoved underneath my door. I was forewarned that this might happen after receiving a 3-day notice to pay rent or quit.
I had, as usual put the rent in the drop box as I have always done, so I wrote a letter to the Property Management group because I only had their address and not a phone number. When they called back, it seemed to me that they did not read the letter and asked why I had not paid rent. I assured them that I had and that I would come write them a new check to resolve the matter. They responded by giving me fifteen minutes to deliver a cashier's check to their office. I began to ask for directions to the office, but they hung up. I called right back and was put on hold for 10 minutes before being disconnected.
