Witnesses' Right to Privacy

My question involves civil rights in the State of: GA

My spouse was the sole Plaintiff in a litigation against a corporation for assault by one of their employees. I was not a witness to the assault, but I was with my spouse at the hospital, attended to the spouses needs from the assault and was aware of all the damages caused.

I was listed as a possible witness in the case in court documents.

Q: Did the Defendant and their counsel have the right to perform a complete and thorough background check on me since I was not listed as a co-Plaintiff?

What exactly is a "complete and thorough background check"? For the most part, yes. In fact I could run a background check on you. But without a legal basis I can't do certain things as part of that background check, such as running your credit without a legally valid release or basis (e.g., your applying with me for credit).
