Private Driveway Accident

Hi,

I rent an appartment in Australia. I have a private garage with an electric carport. Yesterday (it was already dark), I opened my carport and backed up like I ve done always. But now, there was a car parked on my driveway. I backed up real slow, but didn't look. So I hit the car. Am i responsible for the damage caused? Or is it 50/50? The other car wasn't supposed to be on my driveway. No lights on, no one inside the car. I don't know the owner. Now he 's telling me I should pay for the damage caused.
