Once the application has been accepted and is pending, can the applicant remain here until a ruling on the application? The current visa (J1) is to expire before the estimated processing days given by USCIS.

Does the person have a departure date on his or her I-94, or is it instead marked "D/S" or "Duration of Status"? If it is the latter, status would expire thirty days after the date on the person's Form DS2019, which may be enough time to get the extension approved.
