On SSI in New York, Relocating to Florida

Hi all, I am a resident in nyc, but I am moving to florida soon.. How do I go about changing my ssi case to my new place? I was told that I have to go to my ssi office here in nyc and ask for a transfer to Florida is this correct? Thank you very much...

When you plan to move, tell us your new address and phone number as soon as you know them. Also please let us know the names of any family members who are getting benefits and are moving with you. Even if you receive your benefits by direct deposit, we must have your correct address so we can send letters and other important information to you. Your benefits will be stopped if we are unable to contact you. You can change your address at our website,

Be sure you also file a change of address with your post office.

There will be additional questions about your living arrangements to determine if you are being paid the correct amount as an SSI recipient. Your address, the names of people you live with, your agreement with them, whether you rent or own, how much rent you pay, whether that is the market value of the rent, if you get help from others in paying any shelter bills. There could be a change in the state amount paid if either New York or Florida have a state supplement. Best decision is to go to the Florida office when you arrive.
