My question involves criminal law for the state of: OR
I was recently caught shoplifting at Whole Foods. I was guilty, am regretful and mailed the check for the Civil Demand Letter I received (issued according to ORS 30.870 and 30.875) that very night. They told me to comply within 2 weeks so as to avoid the need to "file a civil action in the appropriate court of law".
It has been 12 days since I mailed the check. They have not cashed it and the letter only has a phone number on it that takes you directly to a message machine. I have left two messages looking to confirm their having received it and they haven't responded to either.
Should I mail another check to ensure everything goes smoothly? I hesitate because I am obviously broke and am afraid it might mindlessly be cashed twice. What would a civil action entail if something has gone wrong with my payment? I just want this all to be over.
oh and the amount I shoplifted was $12.45 if that matters.
