Super Late Title Transfer/Registration

My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: California

I bought a car from a private seller about 3 years ago but it was not running at the time (although it was registered as operational) now that I have the time and resources to fix the car I have to get it registered but I do not know how much I will have to pay and what forms I need.... I have the bill of sale, pink slip and what appears to be an old registration receipt? I do not have the smog certification either..........

You'll have to contact the DMV to find out exactly how much you'll have to pay to get it registered. My understanding is that you will have to pay the full registration fees (+ late fees) for the previous unpaid years ~ as I doubt they'll allow you to file and pay the in-op fees 3 years later.

As for the title transfer, the vehicle will have to pass smog before the transfer can be in processed. So you will need to get it up and running before you can do that.

I recently had a similar instance in Texas. Not sure if the same applies in CA.

When I went to get the title transferred and registered (a year late) they were going to charge a bunch of late fees, but they made me state that the car had not been driven in that time, and they waived any late fees.
