Could this be defamation? Can I sue and how to prove a case

I've been in a relationship with someone for almost 4 years. This man has lived with me for almost 3 years but is married. There have been several incidents from the beginning until recently where the wife and her mother have spread lies about me. The one I'm most concerned about is the rumor that they spread about me having a bunch of std's. I have medical records to prove this untrue but how do I prove that they said this in court? Is tape recording conversations legal in the state of New Jersey?

It appears that New Jersey lets you record conversation as long as you are a party to the conversation.

Spreading false accusations that somebody has an STD is typically defamation per se, which makes it a strong basis for a defamation case.
