My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Georgia

I'm a U.S. Citizen and born in the U.S., and a Canadian Landed Immigrant.

I learned a year ago - through a U.S. collection company letter - that a former bankruptcy did not clear my U.S. student loan, which - with penalities and interest - is over $15,000. To my knowledge, the U.S. government has not filed a suit against me.

All of my income and bank accounts are Canadian, so an attorney informed me that they can't garnish or seize my Cdn. assets (which don't total the amount due, anyway).

I have to fly to the U.S. this week (to the City where the loan originated) for a funeral. You answered previously that an unpaid debt - in and of itself - wont' get your arrested when you enter the U.S. That doesn't sound veery certain.

  • Can you elaborate on "in and of itself?"
  • Can they seize my VISA or MC (from Canada but U.S. owned banks, etc.) or seize my cash on hand?
  • Is my social security number and/or passport numebr likely to be flagged on the computer database used by Customs and Immigrations at the airports?
  • If so, would they be likely to try to contact me while I'm in the U.S.?
