Default Denied Driver's License Renewal Due to Old DUI

My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: AZ/CA
After fifteen years with clean CA license--went to renew and was denied renewal because of earlier AZ DUI problems. At time of DUI #2 in AZ (23 years ago), I had a valid AZ license and was advised by lawyer to go to Tex (my home state) to obtain a license. I did so. I was subsequently convicted and served 30 days in AZ jail. When released, I had a valid TX license, and boogied to parts unknown without paying fine or attending driving school. My CA license is now expired a few months. Questions:
    1. If I come clean will I jepardize my Social Security payments?
    2. Will the penalty for driving with expired be less painful than coming clean?
    3. Did my application for a passport result in the DMV's in AZ/CA sudden communication?
    Thanks

With the NDR/PDPS (National Driver Registry/Problem Driver Pointer System), you will have to take care of business with AZ before you can renew CA license. All 50 states plus US territories are hooked in. This was also mandated by the federal gov't. This NDR/PDPS is a "national list" of drivers suspended or convicted of major offenses.

There has been cases of people getting convicted of major offenses many years back and getting suspended as well, they return home, keep and are able to renew their license for a few cycles then suddenly that old conviction prevents license renewal. This happened with states like North Carolina who are also notorious for making you jump through hoops to get your NC driving privilege reinstated in order to keep and renew your home state license.

It might be time to make a phone call to the AZ DOT and see what is needed to get reinstated by them in order to get your CA license renewed. Please let us know what happens.

Old offenses are a problem because NDR only came into play around 1992. It took many States years to put their problem drivers into the database. In the meantime they were renewing their licenses in other States. Long story short...these people knew they had an issue in the State of offense that was not cleared up. They were allowed at the time, due to lack of technology, to slip through and receive licenses in other States. More times than not, it is a matter of a simple reinstatement fee owed to to the State of offense. Just because a bunch of years have gone by...does not mean you don't have to comply with the original requirements that were set upon you
