My question involves child support in the State of: New York
Is it usual for a child support order to be put in place where both parents have shared physical (split 50/50 )custody of a child?

Yes it can happen. It can also happen that the primary custodial parent pays the non-custodial parent child support (like a 90/10%). It's all based on time with the child and the amount each parent makes. If one parent was the breadwinner while the other was the stay at home parent, then the breadwinner most likely will be paying child support despite having equal parenting time.
Sucks sometimes, but that's the way it is.
