Traffic Accident

I recently was involved in an accident and discovered that my insurance had lapsed. The damages to the other persons vehicle amounted to $4000 but the insurance company says that the claimaint is till undergoing medical treatment and the total damages are yet to be accessed. I need to know how much I can be liable for and for how long. Also I am about to be married and wish to know if my future wife will also be liable

That will depend upon what the other person's damages turn out to be, which as you indicate is not something that can presently be assessed.
