Chinese Marriage

I am a US citizen who married a Chinese national in China. We have been living together in China for over a year. We never registered our marriage with the US Embassy here. I'm moving back to the States soon, but honestly am feeling like our marriage is already heading towards divorce.

My questions are:

1). Is our marriage legally recognized in America?

2) If we decide to divorce in the future and we are living in America, can we obtain a divorce in America, or do we both have to physically return to China in order for us to legally divorce?

1). Is our marriage legally recognized in America?

Yes. (Although the bare claim "We got married in China" is not going to be sufficient proof of marriage as far as the USCIS is concerned, when you apply for a visa for your wife.)

You can divorce in the U.S., and the U.S. will recognize the validity of the divorce. I don't know how China would treat the divorce.
