Friend Claims Ownership of a Stored Car

first off this may not be the right catagory for this so if not im sorry
OK heres the deal ive owned this 1994 firebird since 2003, about a year ago the motor blew up so i stored it in my moms garage, the 7-8 months ago a "friend" of mine told me i could store it there for a while. I asked him a few times over the past months if hed like me to get it he said" no hurry its not in my way" so a few days ago my phone rang and it was some guy asking me for the title to my car because my friend had sold it to him!! i told him that it was not supposed to be for sale and i wanted my car. well i figured out where it was and went there with cops(this guy has a temper) and a tow truck. i showed the cops my title and he started to throw the cops lines of bulls**t like i traded him the car or sumtin which he has nothing to back it up. cops told me that they could not make him give me the car even though i have the title. to top it off the guy who has my car offered to sell it to me. this is me and my dads project and it means the world to us. how do i get it back legaly. what papers do i need?

If the car is inside his garage, you will presumably need a court order to recover it. If it is parked in a place that is publicly accessible, having the title and keys you should be able to simply take possession.
