My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: IN; I purchased a car for my daughter about 5 months ago. I purchased it from one of her friends from school. After signing over the title to us he had already filed for a duplicare title, without my knowing. When I went to the BMV (with sighned title, signed reciept, and proof of insurance) to transfer the title to my name and register the vehicle, that is when I was informed that the seller had recently filed for the duplicate title. Which had stopped me from being able to transfer and register the car into my name. The lady at the BMV told me that the duplicate title over-rides the original, even though I have the original title that is signed over and a signed bill of sale. After I had the car and the title in my posession he came in the middle of the night and attempted to take the car, on 2 different occasions. Which there are police reports. After that is when he filed for the duplicate title, proved by the date. The last time that I had made contact with him, he said he would give me the duplicate title if I gave him more money. Now, recently I have found out that he is in jail for auto theft then burning it. HELP!!!! What do I do from here??
