Angry Registry Gave Me False Information

I purchased my first car (2008 chrysler 300 srt 8) but before purchasing i ran the vin number threw the local regristry, a car shop, and the local police department. The car did not come up stolen and there were no liens on it. I purchased the car and Insured and Registered it. Two days later the police pulled me over and arrested me for Possesion of a stolen vehicle exceeding the value of 5 thousand. The value of the car was $48,000 and i paid $45,000 for it. The person that i bought the car from has been arrested and charged with Grand theft auto and is doing time in jail. Since the registry and other buisness's gave me False information on the car can I sue them for the value of the car or what i paid for it? I don't think that its fair that im being charged with posession of stolen property with out knowing it and losing my money or the car because they made a mistake.

What is "the local registry" - are you talking about the DMV? What state are you in?

What did the "seller" use for a vehicle title when he signed the car over to you?

Believe it or not, databases aren't updated the millisecond a vehicle is stolen. Your seller apparently took advantage of the delay between the time he stole the vehicle and the time a theft report would percolate into the system so as to sell the car without it's appearing stolen.
