Bought a Car, But Haven't Transfered the Title for Over a Year

State of California - Purchased 1 year ago.

Purchased a used car from a private owner. Never took it in to be retitled or registered. Plates are expiring soon, I've been hesitant now to take the vehicle in after delaying for so long.

What are my options and penalties for getting this fixed? I have the vehicle insured (haven't driven except for the last couple of months) and don't want to be on their radar (by appointment) if this is serious.

I am new to california looking to get this done, just need a little guidence and hopefully a positive word. The previous owner has filed his release of liability (so the car is in my name somewhere).

I'll be checking the forums, just didn't see a sticky thread from someone in this situation (most are sellers) and hoped to find advice!

According to the California DMV website:

The number of days you have to transfer ownership of a vehicle you purchased or sold.

Buyer

If you purchase or acquire a vehicle from a private party, you have 10 days from the date of sale to report to DMV the change of ownership. Transfer fees must be paid to DMV within 30 days of the purchase date, even if you do not have all of the required documents. Failure to pay your fees to DMV within 30 days will result in transfer and use tax penalties.

And I couldn't tell you what or how much those penalties are. I have a hunch that it might also depened on the value of the vehicle (buying price)...
