Depends. What state are the children in?

Most states do not define a minimum age.

National SAFEKIDS Campaign urges a minimum age of 12, regardless of state.

There is no stated age in TX- Rule of thumb is 10, as long as the child is not responsible for another child.

Nope. The rule of thumb is...It depends. What are the circumstance? The time? The length of the child's alone time? The danger of the neighborhood...Are there sex offenders living next-door? Drug dealing? Gang bangers hanging out on the stoop??

Parents need to use some commonsense in making the decision to allow young children to be responsible for themselves.
