My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: WI
Hello,
I'm originally from Finland and have lived in US for 7 years now. I have outstanding debt from back home (student loans) and now I started receiving phone calls from US company asking me to pay them monthly. For what I see from the letters, they are working for their client from Finland. They don't own the debt. Can I get in to serious legal trouble in US if I don't pay it. With my current situation I can not afford to pay. Thank you for all your advice.

The most they can do in the U.S. is pursue civil remedies against you. I don't know how much money is involved, or whether it would be worth it to them to try to take you to court to get the money; if it's not enough money to justify suing you, they'll likely continue with calls and letters unless and until you instruct them to stop.
