If you marry a U.S. citizen while lawfully in the U.S., you would apply to adjust your status on the basis of the marriage, then begin the waiting process to qualify for citizenship. You do not automatically become a citizen.
Could citizenship still be obtain by marriage, if husband and wife has separtated?
Absent an unsual circumstance, such as the non-citizen spouse leaving the marriage due to domestic violence, no.
