Unhappy Student Loan from New Jersey
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: New Jersey

I had a student loan in the state of New Jersey over 15 years ago & it was part of the settlement in my bankruptcy. Now after all this time I am getting harrassing letters from the New Jersey Education Authority saying if I don't pay this they will take my income tax. When I applied for the loan it was only $3,000.00 now they want over $45,00.00. Is this even legal ? Can they take my income tax ? Someone please help me.

Have you asked them for an accounting of the loan, or if they'll consider settling for a more reasonable amout?

What do you mean, "it was part of the settlement in my bankruptcy"? If this wasn't a federally guaranteed student loan that is (normally) exempt from discharge in bankruptcy, and you're stating it was discharged in bankruptcy, inform them of that fact and see how they respond.

I sent them a copy of my bankruptcy paper from 1996 with the name Sallie Mae on it & the amount was only $100.00 that was owed, but one of the letters I received said I owed over $45,000.00.Is there a Statute of Limitations on this ?
