Selling a Home With a Lodger Tenant

I rented a room in the home I live in and I am selling it. I need the tenant to vacate and he's giving me a hard time

Do you have a written lease with the tenant? If so, when does it expire? If not, is rent paid monthly?

No lease, month to month, paid cash for three years until this last month and now decided to pay by check on a weekly basis
