actually there are hard and fast rules. if you are reporting to your first duty station, the time and mileage is not required to be compensated. Once you report to work, all travel time and mileage is either compensable or deductible on your taxes.

that is for an employee anyway. IC's are different.
I am not an attorney and any advice is not to be construed as legal advice. You might even want to ignore my advice. Actually, there are plenty of real attorneys that you might want to ignore as well.

And exactly where are these "hard and fast rules"?

You miss and then admit my point. He is NOT reporting to his employer's location. He is reporting to the location of a CUSTOMER of his employer.
I maintain the employer is responsible.

At the same time, I do not recommend making a war of this issue. I would assume an IT consultant acting as a system administrator is making enough money to afford the transportation of 20 miles each way.

In most metro areas, a 20 mile commute is relatively minor.

your job station is wherever your employer tells you to report to. If that is the office, then anything after that is work time and you would get paid for it. If you are to report to some different site, then driving to work there would be no difference than driving to the office and there is no requirement to pay you for this. As well, unless I am mistaken, this is not tax deductible either as it is simply driving to and from work, which is not deductible.

That sounds reasonable. I stand corrected.
