Default Suing to Recover Cost of a Cancelled Wedding

    Michigan

Not sure where to put this, so if the mods feel like moving it to the correct spot, please be my guest.

My ex and I planned to get married. I'm 4 months pregnant and my family and I were the ones who paid for everything - my MOM even bought the ring (had a diamond reset). My ex is the one who called it off - by physically asaulting me. I acquired a PPO against him.

    My questions:

    1) I've read that I have legal grounds to sue him for HALF the cost of whatever I/ my family spent. Is this truthful? Of course, I know I can try, but I suppose I want to know if it's realistic.

    2) I had the diamond/ring from a previous engagement and we coudln't really afford one, so my mom paid for me to have the diamond reset. This was NEVER his ring/diamond. And I just stuck it on my finger as my engagement ring - he never "proposed" in the common sense - we just agreed to get married. The resetting cost $500. He said he would pay my mom back when he could, so am I able to sue him for half or all? Also, if I sue him for all, does that mean he "owns" the ring, even though it wasn't his?

    3) Has anyone been successful suing their ex for cancelled wedding?

We have no information about how much you've spent, whether or not you can cancel, get full or partial refunds, etc., so we're not in a position to guess as to whether or what you could recover if you sue. You're free to sue and see what the judge decides.

If your mom spent money to have your ring reset, and he promised to give money to her, she may be able to sue. You can't, as you suffered no damages - and in fact profited by having your ring reset in the manner you wanted at no expense to yourself. Whether or not a court would regard his alleged promise as creating an enforceable debt or as an unenforceable promise to make a gift is something we can't answer on the limited facts available.
