Can You Really Have Wages Garnished Because of Unpaid School Tuition
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Ohio
I have been receiving calls from a guy stating that I owe the University of Akron tuition of $9,000 because of failing to drop my classes properly and not withdrawing from the college correctly.
I was 17 years old at the time (Fall of 2001) failing a couple classes and was told that I would be automatically kicked out of the school if I finished the 1st semester with failing grades, which I did.
Now, it's 2009 and I'm getting calls from a guy stating that unless this is repayed by putting down 10% now ($900 of which I don't have, I only bring home 1342 a month after taxes), I will be garnished my wages and my federal income tax return as well!
Is this true? Can my wages be garnished because of an unpaid school tuition? Not a federal student loan, but tuition fees. Can somebody help me please......

If they sue you and win a judgement then YES your wages can/will be garnished.

I've heard different things about this. Some people say yes, some say no. So my wages can be garnished because of unpaid tuition from 8 years ago? That's horrible

Why is it horrible that the people you have owed money to for almost a decade want their money and are tired of waiting?

It's horrible, because they are charging me for enrolling in classes in which I physically never attended.
I did attend the 1st semester, but they are also charging me for the second semester as well.....even though I left the school before thanksgiving break and never attended.

Did you sign up for the classes?

Do you want even more bad news???
Student loan debt doesn't ever go away unpaid. Unless, that is you are six-feet under

They say I did, but I don't remember doing so. Especially, since I left before Thanksgiving Break and never came back.
I think it's totally ridiculous that a school would try and get over on someone if they signed up for classes, but never attended. In my case, I left in November and they are trying to get me to pay for classes that started in the Spring Semester.
That's getting over on people.

This wasn't a student loan though. I am paying that back already. This is for school tuition charges.

It's not their fault you committed to classes, then didn't attend.
If you register for classes, decide to leave school before they commence, and fail to formally withdraw? You're on the hook for the fees.
They're not "getting over" on you, they're following standard policy.
