Default Hit by driver with a suspended license.

A friend of mine was hit as a driver with a suspended license ran a red light. My friend only has PLPD and her car which was a '97 Grand Prix is totalled. KBB is around $4000 or so. It is the other persons fault, but under Michigan PLPD as I understand it, the most she could get from the other driver is $500 with a mini tort. Does the law change for the fact that the driver had the suspended license and if so, is there any further legal ramifications?

    Thanks!!

The situation in Michigan changes if the at-fault driver is uninsured, as uninsured drivers don't get the protection of mini-tort. The problem is, most uninsured drivers don't have the money to pay for the damage they cause.

But being unlicensed alone won't change the mini-tort limit.
