Default Entered on a J-1, But No Longer an Au Pair: How Can I Stay

I came here (Arizona) recently on a J-1 Visa as an Au Pair, but my host family and I did not work out. I am no longer a part of the Au Pair program and am staying with a friend I met while here (USA). Am I able to get another job without changing status? If not, what do I need to do to change my visa status? I am interested in both working and going to college. Thank you.

Your sponsorship has ended? Then you're out of status.
