Multiple Debts from Different Hospitals Through the Same Collection Agency

My question involves estate proceedings in the state of: Texas

I have opened an account in "the estate of" my dad in order to cash a life insurance policy check. This check was issued to the estate because my dad never changed the beneficiary after my mothers death in 2006.

There is a medical bill that was forwarded to a collection agency for $24.10 which I was planning on paying. But when I called about it I was informed of another debt of $996. that I was completely unaware of from a different hospital dating back to 2006. I have not received any notices nor have I come across anything in writing about about this debt. The representative could not provide an explanation for the debt either. If I pay the $24.10 am I liable for the $996.? They did have different invoice numbers from two different medical institution according to the rep.
