Default Father's Responsibilities
My question involves paternity law for the State of: South Carolina

My question is..I am 19 and never seen my father..he ran off and denied the fact that my mother was pregnant. I have tried contacting him on many of occasions but all were unsuccessful. It is time for me to start college but with limited funds it will be hard.So my question is, is my father resposible for paying for my college and so forth?

I believe that unfortunately he has no legal obligation to do so, although there may be a moral one.

The best thing for you to do is to either put him behind you, or continue to try to contact him and hope that someday a connection can be made.

Good luck.

If mom never established him LEGALLY as the father (such as by marriage, acknowledgement of paternity, DNA testing via court order, or other methods), he is a legal stranger to you and thus has no obligation. If child support had ever been established, then college expenses could have been factored in.

In the meantime, take a minute when you get a chance and let mom know what a great job she did - raising you to adulthood and ready to tackle college without your father around or his financial support.
