Default Taking All the Blame for Heating Bill

I am subleasing a place and I had a very cold room. I kept turning up the heat in the house every night and we have gotten some pretty big heating bills. The other house members are trying to make me liable for the heating expenses. Can they do this? I am just a subletter and have no contract with the landlord. I don't know if this has any effect on the situation.

I'm no expert. In fact, I'm just a reader of this forum who's recently posted an issue, myself.

A lot of old houses have irregular heating patterns where some rooms get less heat than others. Aa a nonexpert I say, unless you've got a written agreement with your housemates that one person can be held responsible for very high heating bills, then I don't see how your housemates can hold you responsible.

However, if your housemates don't like excess heat, you may want to get an electric space heater for your room. That's what we do here. Just don't leave it on while you're gone!
