Question Pursuing Paternity in Washington
My question involves paternity law for the State of: WA and MD

My ex-girlfriend and I found out we were pregnant after we had broken up. After we broke up but before we found out we were pregnant I had moved back to the state of Washington (we were in Maryland).

She has decided that she does not want me involved at all. Is there any way that I can protect myself in a situation like this?

As soon as the baby is born you can file a paternity action with the court in MD.

What about being on the Birth Certificate? If she doesn't put me on it, could she still pursuit legal action later if she changed her mind?

I'm sorry, but I have to say it: condoms.

You made a child; you may very well be on the hook for at least 21 years.

Not only could SHE pursue it, but if she applies of any of the various types of government aid at some time in the future, the GOVERNMENT will pursue it - they'll want money out of YOU before they'll turn to handing over tax payer dollars to support the child.
