Is It Illegal to Display 2 Registration Stickers from Consecutive Years

My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: CA
I received a ticket for displaying registration stickers for the current year and for the year before one above the other in the right hand upper corner of my license plate. i did not even know this was illegal and the cop told me it was warning and not a fine. Then I get a notice form the city court saying that since I hadn't paid the original fine (which I was not aware of), the were fining me an additional $300! How do I contest this? Is this even a real law?

What was the code section for which you were originally cited? or, for which they say you were cited but did not pay?

At this point, it would seem prudent for you to make a court date if you can.
